An 8th-grade student from Austin ISD's Covington Middle School, identified as Vadir Gonzalez-Arias, tragically passed away on May 29 after an incident during a class celebration. FOX 7 Austin reported that Principal Cedric Maddox informed the school community about the student's medical emergency on May 28, with an unfortunate update on the following day confirming that complications led to Vadir's death.

According to a statement obtained by CBS Austin, Principal Maddox reached out to the families to deeply express how “We are hurting deeply and our hearts go out to their family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time." He described Vadir as "kind, caring, and approached each day with a positive attitude and a willingness to do what was asked of him," and emphasized the impact the student had, stating, "He treated his peers and teachers with genuine respect and made those around him feel seen and appreciated." The heartrending circumstances have undoubtedly cast a somber cloud over the school community.

In response to the tragedy, the school has arranged for counseling support, making the campus accessible as a counseling center on Friday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Here, students and staff can find resources and support to help navigate their grief and emotions. Multiple English and Spanish-speaking counselors, along with licensed mental health professionals, are poised to quickly aid and assist in small groups or individual settings.

Principal Maddox also shared resources for continued support, emphasizing that it's natural for children to "not feel anything right away" and that "it can take a while—sometimes days or weeks—for children to show their feelings, and that is normal." In his communications, as shared by FOX 7 Austin, he urged families to validate and clearly communicate about any emotions that surface during this time. Additional resources mentioned include The Christi Center and Integral Care, highlighting the availability of support for mental health crises or appointments, as well as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Austin ISD Employee Assistance Program resources.
