Austin's own public power provider, Austin Energy, has hit a noteworthy milestone this May, celebrating 130 years of service to the capital city. Since 1895, when it first ignited the historic moonlight towers, the utility has consistently delivered on its stated mission of providing clean, affordable, and reliable energy. The celebration has been somewhat dampened by weather concerns, leading to the cancellation of the ceremonial moonlight tower lighting set for Tuesday, May 6, but alternative festivities are moving ahead as planned.
In recognition of Austin Energy's long-standing contributions, residents are invited to partake in a morning of commemoration, complete with coffee and doughnuts on Thursday, May 8. According to an announcement made by the utility, sourced from the City of Austin's official news release, the event will include an official proclamation and is set to begin promptly at 9 a.m. in the City Council Lobby and News Conference Room, located at 301 W. 2nd Street. Austin Energy will also take this opportunity to showcase its moonlight tower replica and dive into the rich narrative of the utility's history.
The utility isn't just a silent fixture in the background; it's an active player in shaping the city's future. Austin Energy stands committed to pioneering renewable energy and aspires to achieve a carbon-free existence by 2035, while also expanding the local electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Their impact extends to social programs, evidenced by the utility serving over 70,000 residents through its Customer Assistance Program and providing weatherization services to those of modest means.
The recognition of Austin Energy's service isn't singular in nature, it includes acknowledgment of individual commitments. Among those revered during the 130th-year celebration are five of Austin Energy's most tenured employees, including Sam Lopez, who has dedicated 40 years as a Survey Technician, and Joan Wilhite, with 35 years as Electric System Field Operations Manager. These individuals, as chronicled in a statement obtained by the City of Austin's press statement, reflect the human cornerstone that underpins the utility's enduring success.
Speaking on behalf of the utility, Austin Energy's interim general manager, Stuart Reilly, was quoted as saying, “The essential services that Austin Energy provides are even more important today, as we are not only powering our community, we are helping to power Austin’s economy.” Reilly's sentiment illustrates the evolving role of Austin Energy from simply an electricity provider to a strategic partner in the area’s ongoing economic development. As it now serves over 560,000 residential and commercial customer accounts within the Greater Austin area, Austin Energy shows no signs of dimming its commitment to the community and continues its trajectory of growth and service innovation.
