In an effort to tackle the notorious weekend gridlock at Zilker Park and Barton Springs, the city of Austin's Parks and Recreation Department has unveiled a new, cost-free transportation solution named "Zilker Loop". Starting May 24, this shuttle service will connect park goers from the lesser-trafficked Stratford Lot to key attractions within the park, such as Zilker Playground, Barton Creek, and the iconic Barton Springs Pool—a welcome alternative for many seeking relief from the traffic snarls.
The service, which debuts on a Saturday, is aimed squarely at improving the visitor experience—a move likely to be embraced by locals and tourists alike. Per Austin's official announcement, the Zilker Loop will operate on weekends and selected holidays, setting out from the Stratford Parking Lot where the first two parking hours can be redeemed for free with a promo code in the Park ATX App, although regular parking rates at Zilker are set at $3 per hour.
Scheduled to run between noon and 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays until September 1, the loop includes stops at four prime locations within the park—the Stratford Lot, Playground, Barton Springs Pool, and Polo Fields Parking Area. Riders can expect the shuttle to make its rounds approximately every 15 to 20 minutes, affording them a convenient hop-on-hop-off experience with the caveat that no pets or coolers are permitted aboard.
Commemorative dates when the Zilker Loop will be in service include Memorial Day on May 26, Juneteenth on June 19, Independence Day on July 4, and Labor Day on September 1, the Parks and Recreation Department illustrated the service is a seasonal fixture designed specifically for peak visitation days when the verdant expanses of Zilker become a focal point for relaxation and recreation.
