Austin Police Department (APD) announced the latest developments in the homicide investigation of an Infowars employee, Jamie White, with three new suspects in custody, as reported by FOX 7 Austin. The March fatal shooting of White, which occurred as he reportedly interrupted a burglary attempt on his green Kia Soul, has led to seven arrests in total; three of them were shared with the public on Thursday.
Seventeen-year-old Eloy Adrian Camarillo was arrested on April 30 and two 15-year-olds—one was detained on May 5 and the other on May 20, following an intensive investigation that pieced together cell tower data and surveillance footage; APD claims that the group targeted multiple Kia vehicles, capitalizing on known manufacturing vulnerabilities that make them susceptible to theft. Rodney Charles Hill, also 17, is the most recent arrest, captured on May 27 and he, alongside the others, faces capital murder charges; it was this accumulation of incidents that Detective Jason Jones described as indicative of "a very big problem in Austin,” where vehicle thefts have escalated into violent confrontations, as KXAN reported.
While the full spectrum of motives behind the violent event remains under scrutiny, evidence came to light that Hill apparently recorded a self-performed rap alluding to the crime, with the disturbing lyrics “White boy came outside/Hit his damn a– with a 9," as per the affidavit mentioned by KXAN. Meanwhile, APD underscores that the suspects' brazen criminal spree encompassed at least two other car thefts in the days surrounding White's death, with Camarillo admitting to their attempt at joyriding that culminated in violence when White confronted the gang, wielding something resembling a bat.
Amidst these developments, APD stresses the importance of safety, urging the public to employ deterrents such as steering wheel locks, which have proven effective in deterring thieves and potentially saving lives—Jones' advice, "Your vehicle is not worth your life," echoes through the words of FOX 7 Austin, highlighting a painful truth for the Austin community grappling with a rise in auto thefts since 2018; the infamous TikTok challenge of 2023 that simplistically demonstrated the hijacking of certain car models like Kias and Hyundais without traditional immobilizers, only exacerbating the problem.
As the APD's investigation continues, it is confirmed that no other suspects are currently sought, and the department believes that they have now apprehended all those responsible for the tragic series of events that led to the untimely death of Jamie White. The police urge anyone witnessing a vehicle break-in to call 911 with descriptions and to avoid direct confrontations, as several recent incidents suggest the assailants are often armed and dangerous.
