The Austin Police Department (APD) is taking measures to mitigate the risks associated with intoxicated driving in the downtown area over the Memorial Day Weekend. According to a statement released by APD, starting from Thursday, May 22nd, through Monday, May 26th, there will be an increased presence of patrol officers tasked with enforcing traffic laws, specifically looking out for those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
As part of their ongoing efforts to curb DWI offenses, the APD reminded the public of the year-round DWI No Refusal Initiative, which is in effect nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This initiative allows law enforcement to obtain blood search warrants for suspects who refuse to provide a breath or blood specimen when required to do so by law. APD's message is clear: they are committed to keeping the streets—and by extension, its countless travelers—safe from the perils of irresponsible decision-making behind the wheel.
In collaboration with the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department, APD emphasizes its dedication to the prevention of fatalities on Austin's roads and waterways.
