Avondale's own Councilmember Gloria Solorio is making moves on the national stage, having recently attended the NALEO Policy Institute focused on economic mobility for Latinas; she, alongside a cohort of 70 Latino policymakers, gathered in Los Angeles for a critical discussion on bolstering Latina prosperity. According to a post on the City of Avondale website, the two-day event was held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel and offered a platform for exploring how Latinas contribute to the U.S. economy and what policy moves can be made to magnify that impact.
With representation from 14 states, the gathering was a networking hub where Solorio and her peers engaged with top experts from the public and private sectors, academia, and nonprofit organizations, sharing strategies for education, workforce development, and better access to public benefits for Latinas and their families, in sessions that were driven by the latest research and data on economic mobility, the website said. These discussions also covered the critical issues like Latina entrepreneurship, wealth building through homeownership, and how to streamline Latinas' access to capital. Despite the far-reaching contributions Latinas have made to the U.S. economy, there remains a significant gap in their economic mobility, which policymakers and experts have sought to address.
Prominent voices like Ana Valdez of the Latino Donor Collective, Inc., and Patty Juarez from Wells Fargo shared their insights at the Institute; their focus, to chisel out solid strategies that could pave productive paths for Latina growth and community wealth building. Additionally, the collective expertise of Ross Tilchin of Results for America, David Forte from Opportunity Insights, and Julia Dale from Civilla contributed to the rich tapestry of ideas and approaches discussed during the event.
Councilmember Solorio, whose participation in such initiatives marks a consistent commitment to advancing Latina economic issues within her community, stood as part of a two-decade tradition where Latino leaders have sharpened their governance and leadership abilities through targeted institutes such as this.
