As Memorial Day nears, cities across the nation are rolling out their plans for honoring those who've paid the ultimate price for their country. The City of Avondale is no exception; they're gearing up for a day of solemn festivities and reflection.
On Monday, May 26 at 8:30 a.m., the Avondale Civic Center Amphitheater will host the Memorial Day Ceremony, a community event to pay homage to fallen service members. The Avondale Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with several organizations, is spearheading the ceremony and extends an invitation to the public. "The event is organized by the Avondale Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with various organizations," reports the City of Avondale's announcement. This gathering represents a communal space for individuals to come together in remembrance.
However, the holiday also means that certain city services will hit the pause button. City of Avondale has announced that its administrative offices, Civic Center Library, Sam Garcia Library, and the Mountain View Community Center will be closed on the holiday. An exception being the Arizona Complete Health Avondale Resource Center which, despite being out of operation for general services, will open its doors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide heat relief for those in need.
Recreational activities are still on the table despite some closures. City parks and the Avondale Aquatic Center will welcome visitors looking to enjoy their day off. The information regarding operational hours can be found on the City of Avondale's official website. Another reminder from the city is trash and recycling services will run per usual, so residents should keep to their normal schedule. "Avondale Public Works will maintain normal Solid Waste trash and recycling pickup schedules," the city's announcement mentions. Again, Avondale directs residents to their website for details on bulk trash zones and collection schedules.
Those depending on public transportation should anticipate some changes, as Valley Metro bus services will observe a Sunday schedule, and there will be no RAPID/Express bus service nor WeRIDE microtransit in operation. This scaling back of service is a common alteration for holiday observance.
