Public health officials have warned about potential measles exposure at several well-trafficked locations across our region in the past week. If you've been to H Mart in San Jose last Wednesday, Starbucks in Newark last Friday, or Trader Joe's in Milpitas on May 25 during the times listed on the Santa Clara County Public Health Department website, you should assess your risk and potentially follow up with your healthcare provider, especially if you're unsure about your measles immunity status or vaccination history.
This caution comes on the heels of a confirmed case of measles in the county, the first of its kind in 2025, after a resident tested positive following international travel and possible exposure at a U.S. airport; the patient was not hospitalized but remains in isolation at home, according to a health alert from the county. It's a reminder of measles' relentless contagion rate, as those not immune can easily catch it from an infected person coughing or sneezing, your health might be compromised if you're unvaccinated or don't know your vaccination status and in conjunction with the specified exposure locations and times, it's a signal call a medical provider if you fit this profile.
The symptoms to look out for include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash that can be extremely uncomfortable and lead to serious complications. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department stresses the importance of calling any medical facility before you arrive if you suspect you've been exposed to measles. This allows them to take precautionary measures to protect other patients and visitors.
