Yesterday, a boat caught fire near Tempest Knob Boat Ramp in Wareham, MA, prompting three people on board to swim to shore. According to NBC Boston, the Wareham Department of Natural Resources received a distress call around 1:05 p.m. and responded alongside local police and fire departments.
All three individuals made it safely to land without injuries.
Efforts to extinguish the fire from the water were delayed due to shallow conditions. The Wareham Fire Department reported that efforts to extinguish the fire by boat were difficult because the vessel was located in shallow water.
As per the WHDH, firefighters used a hose relay system from nearby homes to the beach, allowing them to control the fire from shore. The boat was later towed back to the ramp using the owner's trailer. The Wareham Department of Natural Resources reported the operation was completed without further issues.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and Mass DEP were notified. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
