The Senatobia Police Department has released body camera footage showing the arrest of Breshari Faulkner, who faced charges after an altercation over a handicap parking space at a local Walmart; this incident, captured on Mother's Day, has sparked conversations regarding law enforcement's approach in low-level enforcement situations. According to the footage, an officer approached Faulkner after she parked in the spot and upon questioning, Faulkner indicated she was picking up her grandmother but agreed to move her vehicle, the situation escalated when the officer requested her driver's license and subsequently ordered her out of her car, eventually resorting to pulling her from the vehicle when she refused.
In the footage, Faulkner is seen being taken to the ground and handcuffed. Further video evidence also shows Faulkner holding out her ID and requesting a supervisor, causing tensions to rise. She told WREG, "While I got my license in my hand, I’m trying to tell her I want a sergeant. It’s getting loud. She getting vocal. It’s getting hotter and hotter with the situation." The officer, who is yet to be named, was threatened to use a Taser during the altercation, all of which unfolded in front of Faulkner's children.
Adding to the discourse, through a video analysis, a retired Shelby County Sheriff's Office deputy, Mike Collins, observed to FOX13 that the officer could have simply issued a citation and avoided the physical confrontation stating, "She could have taken her ID, written her a citation and been through with it." Collins further criticized the escalation, questioning why the officer opted for arrest over a ticket typically placed on the car's windshield. During the ordeal, bystanders gathered, and Faulkner's grandmother eventually appeared, using a cane, as tensions at the scene remained high.
Senatobia Police have urged the public to report if they believe an officer has acted inappropriately to initiate an investigation; the department receives complaints about handicap parking violations regularly and enforces them to ensure compliance; meanwhile, Chief Richard Chandler refrained from commenting on the incident or potential repercussions for the officer involved, now that Faulkner's charges are in legal proceedings, Walmart has acknowledged the incident, emphasizing the complexity of the issue and its reverberations throughout the community.
