Amidst charges of domestic violence involving two City Hall staffers, Boston City Council member Ed Flynn is demanding the resignation of the city's top economic official. Flynn's call for action comes in the wake of a domestic incident last week that led to the arrests of Marwa Khudaynazar and Chulan Huang. Khudaynazar is the chief of staff at the Office of Police Accountability and Transparency, and Huang serves as a neighborhood liaison for several Boston districts, as per a report by The Boston Globe.
Calling into question the leadership of Segun Idowu, Boston's Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, Flynn, in a social media post quoted by the Boston Herald, declared that Idowu "failed to provide positive and ethical leadership to its employees, businesses and Boston residents," Flynn has also pushed for an external review of hiring practices and the work environment in the Office of Police Accountability and Transparency and other city departments following the incident involving the two aides both were placed on unpaid leave as the situation is further investigated.
The allegations against the City Hall staffers stem from an altercation that occurred early Thursday morning on Hudson Street in Chinatown, which ended with Khudaynazar being charged with assault and battery on a household member and a police officer noted the The Boston Globe. Police records detail that Huang had bite marks while Khudaynazar displayed marks on her wrists, she claimed self-defense and tried to block police efforts, leading to the additional charges.
Josh Kraft, who's currently the most high-profile mayoral contestant against Mayor Wu, has joined Flynn in pressing for clarity regarding the role of Idowu amidst this crisis. Kraft argued, as stated in a Boston Globe article, "The public deserves more information." Flynn, previously considering a mayoral run himself, has been a vocal advocate for ethics reforms within City Hall this has been especially true since the arrest of Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson on public corruption charges, who has since pleaded guilty and is planning to resign.
As of this report, there has been no comment from either Mayor Michelle Wu's office or from Segun Idowu in response to the public allegations and calls for resignation. The push by Flynn for greater oversight and ethical conduct within City Hall continues against a backdrop of legal proceedings and political machinations within the city's administration.
