The City of Boulder is on the lookout for artists to bring a creative touch to its infrastructure. Boulder's Community Vitality Department recently issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) targeting qualified artists or teams to craft mosaic artworks for the revamped Central Avenue Bridge. According to the City of Boulder, these mosaics will be featured on the bridge's concrete walls, set to be visible both from the sidewalk and the street. With a budget set at around $40,000, the initiative seeks designs that not only capture the essence of Boulder's scenic beauty but also the surrounding area's knack for innovation and business acumen.
Deadlines are fast approaching for those keen on having their art displayed for all of Boulder to see, the submission window closes come Monday, June 2, precisely at 11:59 p.m. Aspiring contributors can submit through CaFÉ, a platform dedicated to the submission and handling of calls for artist participation. Brendan Picker-Mahoney, the Public Art Program Manager, expressed enthusiasm for the incoming art, stating, "We’re excited to bring new mosaic artwork to Central Avenue to celebrate the vibrancy of this area," as per the City of Boulder. The city's 1% for Art Policy is credited for making this artistic integration possible, dedicating a portion of capital project funding to public art initiatives.
The city is also reaching out to the community for input on the project. Residents are encouraged to submit their ideas, including themes, local memories, values, and significant words that could inspire the shortlisted artists' proposals. This input is welcome through the Boulder Public Art Program's online portal. Such community participation weaves the public into the art-making process, ensuring that the final installation reflects a collective vision.
Infrastructure-wise, the Central Avenue Bridge replacement promises a facelift to the aging passage, which has served since the early 1970s. The makeover, commencing in September, will address both water flow improvements and meet up-to-date structural standards. Additionally, infrastructural efforts will include updating the waterline between 55th and 57th streets starting this summer.
