In Boulder County, a push for a more sustainable future takes the form of a new grant program targeting the local mobile businesses. Partners for a Clean Environment (PACE), alongside the Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC) and the City of Boulder, have combined forces to launch a financial initiative aimed at assisting food trucks and similar mobile commerce in making a switch to electric power. The program, as reported by Boulder County, offers up to 80% coverage for the costs associated with updating to electric battery systems and procuring energy-efficient kitchen gear.

Norma King, PACE Programming and Community Relations Specialist, highlighted the cultural significance of food trucks. Food trucks are an essential part of our community and culture. She expressed enthusiasm for a program that helps the more than 180 mobile businesses in Boulder County not only to thrive but also to significantly reduce pollution. The synergized Food Truck Electrification & Efficiency program is set to bridge the gap between RAQC's Engines Off endeavor and PACE's equipment-centric grants, allowing vendors to eventually rid themselves of gas-powered generators that have been shown to quickly fill the air with CO2 and unwanted noise.

According to research from the U.S. Department of Energy, the environmental cost of running a traditional food truck generator for eight hours is equivalent to burning a staggering 83 pounds of coal. This startling figure is a driving force behind efforts like Boulder's to endorse a transition to clean energy solutions for industries as diverse as food service. PACE is taking literal moves to mobilize the food truck industry towards an eco-friendlier route by offering subsidies for solar power systems and modern, efficient appliances.

To publicly display and showcase these new energy-conscious options, PACE is hosting a Food Truck Electrification Rally on June 3. During this event, as detailed in their announcement, attendees will have the opportunity to directly engage with vendors who have already begun to actively transform their operations. Clean battery power demonstrations and access to seasoned advice on the topic of electrification will be available. "Free food and drinks" are also promised to be part of the mix as a nod to the cause and community.
