In a bid to ease parking woes and mitigate traffic congestion, Boulder County, Colorado Parks & Wildlife, and the City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks are teaming up to launch a free weekend and holiday shuttle service to Eldorado Canyon State Park. The shuttle, coined the Eldo Shuttle, promises a stress-free journey for adventurers and nature enthusiasts keen on exploring the area's trails and recreational offerings. Starting May 24th, the service will connect hikers and sightseers from Superior, Boulder, and Marshall to four popular local trailheads and the Eldorado Springs Pool.
According to Boulder County, the service is set to kick off this Saturday and will run through September 14th. The schedule includes holiday services on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Amid the bustle of summer, the shuttles will depart every 20 minutes up till September 1st, after which the frequency will dip to every 30 minutes until the service's conclusion.
Parking at the Eldorado Canyon State Park has long been a snag for visitors, particularly during peak periods. By providing a shuttle that does not require reservations, officials aim to alleviate parking pressure and encourage alternative transportation means. It’s additionally worth noting that the shuttle will permit gear such as climbing equipment and bikes, as well as allowing leashed dogs onboard, underlining the region's commitment to accessibility and outdoor recreational activities for a diverse audience.
The Eldo Shuttle not only offers convenience but also prioritizes inclusivity with ADA accessible vehicles and stops, providing access to the Fowler Trail, an option for wheelchair users. Additionally, the state's Park Pass system still applies for shuttle riders over the age of 16 going into Eldorado Canyon State Park, distinct from users headed to the Marshall Mesa, Doudy Draw, or South Mesa trailheads, who can hop on free of any fare or pass.
For those looking to maximize a sustainable approach, connecting to the Eldo Shuttle via public transport is encouraged, with the mention of RTD route options on their webpage. And while the Marshall Mesa Trailhead is under reconstruction during the 2025 season, the shuttle remains a viable way to access this and other popular natural attractions. More so, with the "dirt lot" parking across CO 170 at a premium, the shuttle emerges as the sensible choice for those planning a day out in Boulder County's great outdoors.
