A 10-year-old girl in Brenham, Texas, was swept away by rising floodwaters on Monday afternoon. Multiple agencies, including Brenham ISD, which confirmed she is a student, are working together with specialized crews conducting ground and air operations to search for her, according to Click2Houston.
A girl fell into the current after crossing Higgins Branch Creek. Neighbors and a Brenham police officer attempted a rescue, but the strong water currents hindered their efforts. Both rescuers were treated at the scene. Due to thunderstorms, water-based rescue efforts were delayed, and the Brenham Fire Department switched to land-based search teams, drones with thermal imaging, and trained canines, as reported by CBS News.
Search efforts resumed on Tuesday morning with teams from Conroe's swift water rescue, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Department of Public Safety expanding the search from the Burleson Street Bridge towards Old Independence Road. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for heavy rains and flood conditions, with the possibility of rip currents along the Gulf shores. The Brenham Fire Department asked for prayers in a social media post, saying, "There is bad weather on its way so we ask for prayers for the family and all the first responders involved in the search and rescue," as mentioned by CBS News.
