Cava has opened its newest Houston-area restaurant at 5401 Bellaire Blvd., setting up shop inside the historic Bellaire Triangle Shopping Center. Officials confirmed the grand opening took place on July 28, marking the Mediterranean fast-casual chain's latest push into the region's suburban dining scene.
The new location specializes in Mediterranean-style cuisine, serving customizable bowls, salads, and pitas alongside dips like crazy feta and roasted eggplant, plus classic pita chips, according to Community Impact. Diners can build their own meal by choosing from a lineup of greens, grains, proteins, and dressings, according to the chain's official website. Among the seasonal menu items is the salmon and strawberry sesame bowl, which layers glazed salmon, brown rice, red pepper hummus, tzatziki, feta, sumac slaw, and other vegetables, finished with a strawberry sesame dressing, per the restaurant's online menu.
A Midcentury Retail Landmark Gets a Modern Reboot
The Bellaire Triangle Shopping Center, where the new Cava now sits, was originally developed in 1959 across four acres and roughly 70,000 square feet, making it one of the earliest suburban retail developments in the Houston area, according to the Houston Chronicle. The center sits at the convergence of Bellaire Boulevard, Bissonnet Street, and Chimney Rock Road. Property owner MC Management & Development and broker Shop Cos. launched a multi-phase renovation of the property in late 2022 aimed at restoring original 1950s architectural elements, adding public artwork, and building an open-air dining arcade, as reported by CultureMap Houston. The renovation effort focused on exposing 1950s-era steel columns and brick parapet walls to turn the property into a modern gathering hub.
That transformation has drawn a run of notable culinary tenants to the Triangle. Cava now joins Blood Bros. BBQ, an Asian-fusion Texas barbecue restaurant that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation in Texas's inaugural 2024 Michelin Guide, according to Houston Food Finder. Blood Bros. BBQ opened its permanent location in the center in late 2018, giving the shopping complex an established reputation as a regional dining destination well before Cava's arrival.
Part of a Bigger Corporate Growth Push
The Bellaire opening lands amid an aggressive national expansion for Cava Group. The company announced a national expansion plan in June aiming to open more than 75 new restaurants and hire 2,500 employees in 2026, part of a long-term goal of reaching 1,000 locations nationwide by 2032, per Bisnow. That hiring push is expected to expand Cava's total workforce to over 15,000 employees.
The growth follows a strong first quarter. For fiscal 2026's first quarter, ended April 19, Cava Group reported total revenue of $434.4 million, a 32.2% year-over-year increase, with same-restaurant sales growth of 9.7% and a total store count of 459, according to a Cava Group press release. Guest traffic growth accounted for 6.8% of that same-restaurant sales increase, underscoring the brand's continued momentum as it expands into markets like Bellaire.
Roots Stretching Back to the Zoës Kitchen Buyout
Cava's rapid spread across Texas traces back to its $300 million acquisition of Plano-based Zoës Kitchen in 2018, according to PaperCity Magazine. After the deal, Cava converted more than 200 Zoës locations before officially retiring the Zoës brand in May 2023, a transition that let the company rapidly claim prime retail real estate across Texas suburban markets.
That Texas growth has continued well beyond Bellaire. In March, Cava announced another Greater Houston expansion on the Gulf Freeway in League City bowl expansion, adding to an established footprint that includes locations near Baybrook Mall and Webster. That League City store was slated to employ 25 to 40 local team members upon opening.
A Familiar Community Day Playbook
Cava's standard practice for new store debuts includes hosting a pre-opening Community Day, offering registered guests a free meal while matching public donations up to $1,000 for local food rescue nonprofits, according to Business Wire. That program has donated over $1 million to hunger-relief groups since 2019. For Houston-area debuts, Cava has partnered with Second Servings of Houston, the city's only perishable food rescue organization, to accept Community Day donations and collect fresh food prepared during staff training, as reported by Click2Houston. Second Servings rescues surplus food and delivers it to shelters and food pantries across Greater Houston.
