The Brenham community has been struck by tragedy following the loss of a 10-year-old girl who was swept away by floodwaters on Monday. The young victim, identified as Devah Woods, had been walking home from Brenham Elementary School with her sister when flash flooding quickly escalated, leading to her being caught in the surging waters. CBS Austin reported that emergency responders, including the City of Brenham Fire Department, Washington County EMS, and about 12 other agencies, actively searched for the girl following the incident.

According to CBS Austin, the efforts included two Swift Water Rescue teams near the Burleson Street Bridge, searching downstream toward Old Independence Road. With the search extending well into the night, operations were hampered by another onslaught of severe weather, forcing a temporary retreat from water-based efforts. Rescue efforts were further hindered despite officers from the Brenham Police Department also attempting a rescue, but were themselves swept away, though later rescued downstream and treated by EMS.

The search for Woods continued overnight, with land-based teams, drones equipped with thermal imaging, and canines pressing on through the darkness. By early Tuesday morning, the search had escalated as four swift water rescue teams, comprising the Washington County Search and Rescue and Texas Task Force 1 – Conroe and San Antonio divisions. FOX 26 Houston detailed that additional support came from the Texas Parks and Wildlife and DPS aircraft, adding their aerial capabilities to the search effort.

It was with profound sadness that officials declared the discovery of Woods' body, concluding the search that involved numerous agencies and community members. The Brenham Independent School District extended its condolences to the family, issuing a statement that said, "Our hearts are with the student’s family, and we ask our community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time." As relayed by FOX 26 Houston, Brenham ISD also announced that counseling and support services would be made available for both students and staff.

The incident has underscored the powerful and often sudden nature of flash flooding, highlighting the community's vulnerability to severe weather while mourning the loss of a young life. The Brenham community, still recoiling from the events of the past days, continues to gather in support of the Woods family and others impacted by the tragedy.
