Two Brevard County women have been taken into custody following the discovery of a severely malnourished puppy in their home. According to WFTV, the local sheriff's office described the animal as emaciated and malnourished when a local rescuer discovered it.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey stated that the women, identified as Keishawna Mass and Alexza Ramos, initially refused to let animal control officers inspect the puppy's condition, prompting deputies to get involved. Officials were forced to take action quickly to ensure the well-being of a defenseless creature.
Upon further investigation, it was found that the puppy had been kept in a bathroom without necessities such as food, water, or appropriate care. The woman later called a rescue when the puppy's health severely declined, as reported by ClickOrlando. Sheriff Ivey likened the dog's condition to "bones with skin," indicating extreme neglect.
"Our veterinarians told us that on the scale of 1-9, which is the scale that's used to tell the health and condition of the dog, this dog was a one," Ivey elucidated. Despite clear neglect, the suspects claimed ignorance regarding the dog's dire state. Both Mass and Ramos now face charges related to animal cruelty and keeping an animal enclosed without exercise or fresh air. Additionally, Sheriff Ivey encouraged the community to be vigilant and report animal abuse cases, according to ClickOrlando.
As indicated by Space Coast Daily, the suspects were arrested on counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty and unlawful confinement without food or water. Both women have been booked into Brevard County Jail, with bonds set for release. Mass’s bond is $5,000, and Ramos’ is $3,500.
