In a remarkable nod to the empowerment of students and their commitment to community service, Canutillo ISD schools have been recognized for their outstanding leadership programs. Bill Childress Elementary School, Deanna Davenport Elementary School, and Jose Damian Elementary School have recently been awarded the 2024-2025 Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA) Student Leadership Award. This prestigious acknowledgment singles out school leadership teams that have gone above and beyond in service and civic engagement at the PK-8 level throughout Texas.
More than just a mere accolade, this honor represents the hard work and dedication of Canutillo's young leaders. "This award is a testament to the character and commitment of our students and educators," Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz expressed, as obtained by Canutillo ISD. "It shows what happens when we give students the tools and trust to lead. They don’t just rise to the occasion, they exceed all expectations."
According to the criteria set by TEPSA, the schools have collectively led a slew of impactful initiatives. These include orchestrating food and toy drives, interacting with the elderly in senior centers, celebrating local veterans, promoting appreciation for teachers, and initiating school improvement projects. Harley Eckhart, TEPSA's Executive Director, mentioned that, "Student-led initiatives not only enhance the educational experience but are crucial for fostering civic engagement among to actively participate in their communities," as per Canutillo ISD.
