Pedro Galaviz, superintendent of the Canutillo Independent School District, announced his retirement by the end of December 2025 amid plans for the district to implement tough measures to mitigate impending financial troubles. These measures may lead to layoffs and salary changes that could potentially impact the district's teachers and staff. The announcement came as a surprise to some community members as it could add to the district's financial burdens.
Galaviz, who has not pinned down an exact retirement date but hinted at the end of the year, pointed to the challenges of navigating the current educational climate and the workings of the Canutillo ISD board as his reasons for stepping down. According to El Paso Matters, he is set to depart with a $100,000 payout.
One educator, whose identity was not disclosed, criticized the timing of Galaviz's retirement, suggesting that the financial strain from hiring an interim superintendent while still compensating the outgoing superintendent for six months appeared imprudent. Meanwhile, Board President Armando Rodriguez claimed the financial friction was due to insufficient state funding and not a result of the board's decisions, as mentioned by KFOX-TV.
Despite the upcoming vacancy and the district's current predicaments, Galaviz expressed confidence in Canutillo ISD's future. "I may be retiring from my role, but I’m not leaving Canutillo," he asserted, as reported by KTSM. He described his deep ties to the area, having raised his family there and maintaining a vested interest in the district's success after his departure. The school board plans to discuss the transition process and search for both an interim and permanent replacement in an upcoming school board meeting scheduled for May 20.
