Washingtonians, get your fishing poles ready and circle June 7-8 on your calendars, because the state is bringing back its Free Fishing Weekend. For these two days, locals and visitors alike can take to the waters with no need for a fishing license to catch various species—though there are still some restrictions. According to a news release from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), a license will still be required to fish for shellfish, salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and halibut.
For those looking to make the best of the weekend, options abound. The WDFW suggests angling for rainbow trout, bass, and perch among other gamefish in the state's many lakes. The website also lists the 2025 Trout Derby as a highlight, where derby trout have been planted in over 100 lakes. Kirt Hughes, the WDFW’s fish management division manager, recommended the event as "a great opportunity to enjoy time outside." However, he reminded in a statement obtained by WDFW's newsroom that "it is important to understand the rules before heading out," given that high harvest pressure of shellfish has resulted in early beach closures this spring.
It's not just freshwater fishing that's up for grabs; Puget Sound is home to lingcod and several bottomfish species, while the Washington coast offers chances to fish rockfish and surfperch off the jetties. Moreover, one can fish for shad along the Lower Columbia River. Anglers should keep in mind that seasons, size limits, daily limits, gear rules, recording requirements, and closures remain in effect for all fishing activities.
To sweeten the deal even further, Free Fishing Weekend coincides with the Discover Pass free days, meaning no parking fees on lands managed by Washington State agencies. Noteworthy, the typical requirements such as the Vehicle Access Pass and Two-Pole Endorsement are also waived during this period, as reported by WDFW. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife underscores its role in conserving ecosystems, wildlife, and ensuring sustainable opportunities for recreational and commercial pursuits.
