A 20-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen late Thursday night in the 12500 block of Aurora Avenue North near Northgate, following an earlier altercation with a man at a nearby hotel. Dispatch received reports of the shooting at approximately 11:11 p.m., and officers arriving on scene found the woman with a gunshot wound before she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
According to the Seattle Police Department, the suspect pulled up beside the victim in a black SUV, shot her, and then fled westbound on North 127th Street. He remained unapprehended as of the department's update, and the Gun Violence Reduction Unit is now leading the investigation under incident number 2026-262963. Police have asked anyone with information to call the Violent Crimes Tip Line, and cautioned that the preliminary information released so far is subject to change as the investigation continues.
Seattle Fire Department medics treated the woman at the scene, where officers had already begun providing emergency aid, before transporting her in critical condition to Harborview Medical Center, according to KING 5. Harborview, located in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood, is the only designated Level I adult and pediatric trauma center in Washington state, according to UW Medicine, providing specialized emergency care for major trauma across a four-state region.
Traffic Impacts and Crime Scene Processing
The Seattle Department of Transportation briefly closed the right southbound lane of Aurora Avenue North near North 125th Street overnight while investigators processed the crime scene, the station's report noted. The lane was reopened once officers finished documenting the scene.
This is not the first violent shooting along this stretch of Aurora Avenue this year. On July 23, a separate late-night shooting near North 96th Street and Aurora Avenue North left three women injured after a suspect in a dark sedan opened fire on an occupied vehicle, a case Hoodline previously covered in a North Seattle shooting that hurt three women. Detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit investigated that incident under a separate case number.
Community Frustration Boils Over at Precinct Meeting
The shooting comes just a day after Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson met with North Seattle residents at a North Precinct Advisory Council meeting, where community members voiced mounting frustration over open illegal activity and persistent gunfire along the Aurora Avenue corridor, according to MyNorthwest. King County prosecutors told attendees that 311 felony cases had been charged in North Seattle so far in 2026.
In June, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved emergency legislation authorizing temporary street closures and physical barriers on residential streets west of Aurora Avenue North, aiming to stop corridor violence from spilling into neighborhoods, MyNorthwest reported. That 9-0 vote followed marches and protests by North Seattle residents demanding action on the corridor's recurring gun violence.
Potential Charges If Suspect Is Caught
Under Washington law, RCW 9A.36.011, intentionally shooting someone with a firearm and causing great bodily harm is classified as First-Degree Assault, a Class A felony punishable by up to life imprisonment and a $50,000 fine, according to the Hester Law Group. Standard sentencing guidelines for first-time offenders convicted of the charge range from 93 to 123 months.
Citywide, overall crime in Seattle dropped 18% in 2025 compared to 2024, with homicides down 36% to 37 cases, according to annual data released by the Seattle Police Department in February. SPD reported solving 86% of homicide investigations that year, crediting its Real-Time Crime Center for helping boost clearance rates. Still, residents along Aurora Avenue North say the numbers offer little comfort as shootings continue to erupt on their block, and detectives have not said whether the suspect's black SUV can be linked to other recent incidents in the area.
