The Ceres Police Department will hold a driving under the influence checkpoint tonight from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. The location has not been disclosed. The checkpoint is part of an effort to reduce impaired driving, as reported by the Ceres Police Department.
The Ceres Police Department stated that driving under the influence checkpoints are set up in locations with a high number of impaired driving incidents. Sergeant Bryan Ferreira said, "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk." The department noted that impairment can result from alcohol, prescription or over-the-counter medications, and marijuana. Driving under the influence of any of these substances is against the law.
According to the Ceres Police Department on their Facebook page, a first-time driving under the influence offense can result in about $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license. Driving under the influence checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support local law enforcement.
