The Chandler community is mourning the loss of a young life following a tragic pool accident last week. Emilie Kiser, a well-known TikTok influencer, tragically lost her three-year-old son, Trigg, after he was pulled from the family's backyard pool. Despite the efforts to save him, the boy passed away on Sunday, turning a personal tragedy into a public call for increased water safety awareness. Fox 10 Phoenix reported on the heated discussion around pool safety that has emerged in the wake of the incident.
Following the accident, aerial footage from SkyFOX showed the Kiser residence, where the pool was covered, but no fence was visible around it. In light of the tragedy, the first recorded in Maricopa and Pinal counties this year, Chandler Fire and pool safety experts are emphasizing precautions as temperatures rise and more children will likely be spending time near pools. In a statement obtained by Fox 10 Phoenix, Chandler Fire Battalion Chief Blas Minor stressed the necessity of "adult supervision, barriers and classes for CPR and swim lessons," also known as the ABCs of water safety.
Water accidents remain a serious issue in Arizona, where, according to experts, drowning is the foremost cause of death for children aged one to four years old. Additionally, city lifeguards have undergone hands-on rescue training with the Chandler Fire Department to better prepare for potential emergencies. Chandler Fire personnel have been actively involved in this effort, having showcased techniques for effective rescue and resuscitation procedures, highlighting the critical communication and transitions needed between lifeguards and emergency services in such scenarios.
Meanwhile, Ashley Ackerman has channeled her grief into proactive water safety after the drowning of her son, Braxton, in 2022. Recognizing that accidents like these can occur to anyone, Ackerman dedicates herself to preventing similar tragedies through her organization, Swim 4 Braxton, which offers swim scholarships and education to families. She shared her heart-wrenching experience with AZ Family, saying, "Nobody can say anything to me that I don't already feel. I've been down the road of wanting the blame, wanting the punishment. I mean, I’m punished every day my kids not here."
The conversation has widened, with advocates urging for multiple layers of protection around water. Practical advice includes installing a pool fence with a minimum height of five feet with a self-closing gate, ensuring constant adult supervision around pools, initiating swim lessons or water survival education as soon as feasible, having non-swimmers wear Coast Guard-approved life vests, and learning CPR. Detailed information on these safety precautions and resources offered by Swim 4 Braxton can be found on their website.
