The race for the Charlotte City Council's District 6 seat has intensified with applicants across the board vying for the position left vacant by former council member Tariq Bokhari. Bokhari stepped down after accepting a role in the Trump administration, stirring up a mix of seasoned political figures and fresh faces aiming to take over the seat that represents south Charlotte.

Among the most talked-about candidates is Krista Bokhari, the wife of the former council member, who has made waves for her outspoken criticism of the handling of a dispute involving CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings. In a statement to WCNC Charlotte, Krista Bokhari called for Jennings’ resignation after a reported settlement tied to a conflict with her husband. This development, came soon after Bokhari’s public announcement of her candidacy for the council seat.

Krista Bokhari has garnered support from prominent local Republican figures, but has not confirmed whether she will chase a full term beyond this interim position. According to The Charlotte Observer, other applicants include former elected officials, Andy Dulin and Edwin Peacock III, as well as conservative commentator Andrew Dunn.

The vetting process revealed some discrepancies in eligibility amongst the twelve applicants, noted by WCNC Charlotte, with three candidates, La Reshia Poore, Grayson Sandlin, and Asherdee Welby being ruled ineligible due to party affiliation and residency requirements. The council plans to announce their selection on Monday, reported Queen City News, and the appointed member will serve through December. The first meeting with the new appointee is scheduled for June 2.
