Charlotte County is reaching out to community members to step forward and lend their voices, by volunteering for several advisory board positions within various municipal service benefit units (MSBU) and taxing units (TU). The need for a more inclusive and hands-on governance is underscored by the vacancies spreading across a spectrum of local infrastructure and public safety departments.
Among the units with open positions is the Barrier Island Fire Service Municipal Service Benefit Unit Advisory Board, which is looking to urgently fill a volunteer position set to end on October 31, 2026. To be eligible, applicants need to not only reside within Charlotte County, but they must also live within the Barrier Island unit itself. Those interested in applying can to do so by reaching out to the Public Safety Department via phone at 941-833-5602 or by sending an email to [email protected], according to the Charlotte County website.
For residents keen to influence the conditions of their streets and waterways, there are several other advisory boards also seeking volunteers. Each role demands from candidates a dual commitment; one must both own property within and live within the respective unit. The positions range in term duration, with some concluding as soon as October 2026 and others extending up to the end of October 2028.
Opportunities abound across the county from the Boca Grande Street & Drainage Unit to the Suncoast Waterway Unit, with a range of roles that are crucial in shaping the local urban landscape. For example, the Englewood East Non-Urban Street & Drainage Unit seeks a volunteer with a term through October 31, 2027, whereas the Manasota Key Street & Drainage Unit has two openings, with one term ending in 2027 and another in 2028. Interested parties may forward applications to the Public Works Department, by either visiting 7000 Florida St., Punta Gorda, Fla. 33950, making a call to 941-575-3600, or sending an e-mail to [email protected], as published on the Charlotte County website.
Every appointment stands as an opportunity for the residents to directly participate in the governance and maintenance of their communities. With a comprehensive list of vacancies that encompasses a broad range of interests and expertise, Charlotte County continues to seek out individuals eager to make a difference in their local environment.
