In commemoration of Memorial Day, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department took to social media to honor the fallen heroes of the U.S. armed forces. The department shared a poignant message via Facebook, reflecting on the solemn significance of the day and spotlighting the personal connection that many officers, like CMPD Officer Michael Gainey, have to the military.
Officer Gainey, a veteran himself, shared with the community what Memorial Day personally means to him and, by extension his family. "It's a time for my family and me to honor the military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I keep a picture and bracelet of a friend of mine who died in Iraq close to me, but on Memorial Day, I bring his picture out so everyone can be reminded of his sacrifice. Unfortunately, freedom is not free and this is the day we get to show our respect for those who died," he described in the CMPD post.
As the nation observes Memorial Day, communities are urged to take a moment to contemplate the memories and stories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The CMPD asks citizens to reflect on the lives lost, "we are thankful to all our heroes and ask that you take a moment this Memorial Day to reflect on those our nation has lost in the line of duty," as they stated in their Facebook post.
