A 16-year-old in Charlotte faces charges after a series of events led to the discovery of a gun and marijuana, WBTV reports. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) was conducting surveillance on the teenager, already under suspicion for previous firearm possession. On April 22, officers saw the youth driving without a valid license, which led to a traffic stop and the subsequent sighting of a firearm in the vehicle, police say.
The discovery of the gun inside the teen's car, which seemed to match one they were known to previously carry, prompted officers to obtain a search warrant for the teen's residence where additional firearms and paraphernalia were confiscated - according to a statement obtained by WCNC. The CMPD's Juvenile Accountability & Diversion Empowerment (JADE) Unit had been monitoring the teen for suspicions over illegal firearm activities, and during the stop they confirmed the individual did not have a valid driver's permit and the CMPD further investigated the situation this leading to the house search.
Authorities seized an additional handgun, a pistol brace, and several handgun magazines from the teen's home. As a result, the teenager was arrested and faces several charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of possession of a handgun by a minor, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, as WSOCTV detailed in their report.
