After nearly three decades of service, and six years at the helm of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD), Chief Keith Powers is set to retire on June 30, 2025. The City of Jacksonville shared this announcement on social media, praising Powers for his dedication and the innovative initiatives introduced during his tenure as chief, including Mobile Stroke and Critical Care Units, and Emergency Road Access Teams. Mayor Donna Deegan lauded these efforts, calling them "testaments to the innovation that occurred during his time as Chief."
As the city prepares for this significant transition, plans are underway to appoint a new JFRD chief through an open selection process that will unfold over the next six weeks. The city, in collaboration with JFRD, will reveal the application details shortly, opening doors for potential candidates to lead the department beginning July 1. Chief Powers, due to step down at the end of June, is not leaving the community behind, he will continue to serve as a mentor and guide through the succession, which was strategically planned with the Deegan Administration back in 2023.
In the City of Jacksonville's social media post, Powers expressed his gratitude, saying, "It has been the honor of my lifetime to represent the brave men and women who put their lives on the line each day and serve our community, both on and off duty." He attributed the department's success to its members, asserting, "They are the reason that JFRD is the best fire department in the country."
