The City has announced that starting from May 4, weather permitting, there will be a citywide operation to flush the watermains. According to a notice released, city crews will conduct the flushing at night from 8 pm to 6 am, aiming to improve water quality by clearing out the mineral buildup that naturally occurs in the city's underground water infrastructure. This maintenance is expected to run through the night until Friday morning, May 9.
Residents may notice an unusual sight during this time—water gushing from fire hydrants while city trucks are stationed nearby. This is a part of the normal flushing process, the city reassures, which will span across a five-day period to cover the entire city, as per St. Louis Park, MN. However, no single neighborhood will be affected for more than a short portion of the week. A real-time hydrant flushing status map is available for the public's convenience, allowing residents to check when their area has been serviced.
Although the water main flushing is proven to enhance the water's color and taste, the initial aftermath can include temporary discoloration due to the disturbed particles. The City advises to refrain from laundry activities without first verifying the water's clarity. Running a cold water tap until it runs clear should rectify any discoloration. Public works can be contacted at 952.924.2562 by those who encounter water-stained laundry, staff will provide a chemical to remove the stains, St. Louis Park, MN stated.
