With Memorial Day weekend coming up, the Clark County Fire Department is reminding residents to use grills safely. Fire Chief Billy Samuels advises, "With Memorial Day weekend coming up, it’s a good time of year to remind the public to keep grills on a flat surface away from homes, buildings and dry brush," and says, "To prevent injuries, never leave a hot grill unattended and make sure grills are a safe distance from play areas and foot traffic," according to the Clark County.
Grilling safety rules are in place to prevent fires. Residents are advised to clean grease and fat buildup from grills regularly. In apartments and condominiums, individuals should check with property managers for specific regulations. Clark County prohibits the use of portable outdoor cooking equipment within 10 feet of overhangs, balconies, or building openings in multi-unit housing.
Before using a propane grill, check that all connections are secure and use soapy water to look for gas leaks. For charcoal grills, wait until the coals are completely cool or pour water on them before putting them in a metal container. Chief Samuels says, "Use long-handled grilling tools to have plenty of clearance from heat and flames." Clark County provides more fire safety tips on its website.
