The landscape of waste management in Comal County is shifting as county officials decide to no longer accept green waste at the Comal County Recycling Center. This move was reported following a May 15 vote by Comal County Commissioners Court, aiming to tackle the growing stockpiles of mulch and combat contamination from improperly discarded waste. The New Braunfels City Portal informed the public about the county's mulch and brush operations policy amendment, which has been in effect since December.

According to Comal County Engineer Robert Boyd, the updated brush policies are set to "allow for a safer brush and mulch operation" and to "provide a higher quality mulch to the public," as reported by the New Braunfels City Portal. The county's new direction leaves the City of New Braunfels with the task to closely evaluate the impact on its green waste recycling program. Consequently, residents have been advised to put their green waste in their regular green trash bins, a move that is believed to not only benefit the breakdown of waste in local landfills but also generate gas that can be transformed into electrical energy, presently powering over 3,000 homes.

In light of these changes, the City of New Braunfels continues to support the green waste curbside pickup service until further assessment by the New Braunfels City Council is completed. Residents are being urged to maintain their current disposal habits, placing green waste in brown paper bags or green trash bins for weekly collection, or at the curb for pickup on scheduled recycling days. The ongoing review by city officials will determine the future direction of their curbside recycling efforts and how best to adapt to the county's revamped policy.

As the situation develops, updates will be provided to residents, guiding them through any changes to the recycling program. "Mulch is loaded for free," Boyd reminded residents, pointing out one immediate benefit of the new policy, as noted on the City of New Braunfels website.
