A tragic accident unfolded on Mother's Day in Jacksonville when a pickup truck veered into a retention pond on Lane Avenue South, resulting in the death of at least one person. The local community was shaken as a large group of onlookers gathered to grasp the unfolding situation, reports Action News Jax. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle did not appear to make any turns before driving over a sidewalk, crashing through a fence, and plunging into the water.
As authorities worked diligently to recover the vehicle and the body, residents of the Westside community expressed their dismay and fears. "On Mother's Day. I hope it was not a mother in that car," Keyona Dudley told WOKV. Echoing the sentiment, Patrice Davis added, "That’s very sad news to hear. Hopefully, it's not anyone that we know around the area because it's gonna be more tragic news."
The recovery operation brought forth a grim view as the black pickup was towed from the water, its passenger side crushed, under the eyes of a community steeped in worry and loss. "Now we're just picking up bodies. I'm just waiting to see the truck come out," Dudley said in a statement obtained by WOKV.
While the identity of the victim or victims remains unclear, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no one managed to exit the vehicle before it sank. This tragedy has been marked as the 57th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, said First Coast News.
