DeKalb County is set to embark on a significant upgrade to its water service infrastructure with the commencement of the Peachtree Industrial Water Transmission Main Replacement Project on July 7. The project, which is part of a substantial $4.27 billion capital improvement program, aims to enhance the capacity and reliability of the water service for county residents and businesses, according to the county's recent announcement.

Targeting completion by January 2028 the initiative will see the replacement of approximately 11,000 linear feet of 30-inch carbon steel main with a new, larger 36-inch Ductile Iron main, starting on Malone Drive and progressing north through Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Carver Drive; the work includes the removal of less capacious 8-inch and 6-inch pipes which will then be substituted with more robust 12-inch alternatives. The construction is planned to be executed in three distinct phases, beginning with Malone Drive, stretching to Miller Drive for the second phase, and culminating at Carver Drive for phase three, as detailed by the county's website.

Residents can expect typical construction hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the exclusion of major holidays, yet those residing or working close to the construction zones should anticipate construction-related noise and an uptick in traffic during these times. To better understand the impact and scope of the Peachtree Industrial Water Transmission Main Project, community members are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on June 3 at 6:30 p.m., hosted at Chamblee City Hall.
