Last Thursday marked a significant milestone for Denver's Chicano and Latino communities with the groundbreaking of La Raza Park renovations in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Spearheading the celebration were City Council President Amanda P. Sandoval and Council Member Serena Gonzales-Guitierrez, alongside Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) and local leaders, according to the City and County of Denver. The event kicked off the beginning of a $2 million project to enhance the park, which has been a central hub for cultural expression and civil rights advocacy.

Funding for the improvements comes from a mix of sources, including the Elevate and RISE Denver General Obligation (GO) Bond Programs, DPR Capital Funds, the Denver Parks Legacy Fund, and the Denver Foundation. La Raza Park, having already been officially designated as Denver’s third historic cultural district back in 2023, is now set to undergo a transformation designed to not only refresh its facilities but also preserve its rich cultural identity. Improvement efforts will prominently feature renovation of the children's playgrounds and an enhancement of picnic areas, as well as crucial upgrades to landscaping, irrigation, and accessibility.

"La Raza Park is more than just open space—it’s the soul of our neighborhood," said Sandoval, as per City and County of Denver, emphasizing the park's significance in the community. Sandoval reflects a deep personal connection to the area, elucidating that the renovation is a collective promise "to honor our past while building a future rooted in pride, resilience, and belonging."

Key cultural landmarks such as the Kiosko, Plaza de la Raza, and the “La Raza Unida” sculpture are also to be preserved. Jolon Clark, Executive Director of DPR, explained that these improvements aim to ensure the park continues to serve as a place of pride and connection for generations to come. The dedication to these renovations underscores the city’s commitment to the stories and identities enmeshed in La Raza Park's history.
