The Hawai‘i Police Department reported a slight decrease in driving under the influence arrests on Hawai'i Island from April 21 to April 27, with 10 motorists arrested. The total number of driving under the influence arrests for the year is 304, which is nearly the same as last year during the same period, reflecting a 0.65 percent decrease, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Major crashes have increased slightly this year, with 328 incidents reported, compared to 322 last year, a 1.9 percent rise. However, fatal crashes have decreased, with 10 fatal crashes and 11 deaths recorded, down from 13 crashes and 15 deaths last year, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
The Hawai‘i Police Department's Traffic Services Section regularly conducts driving under the influence checkpoints and patrols across the island. So far this year, there have been no non-traffic fatalities, similar to last year. These efforts are part of an ongoing initiative to reduce impaired driving and improve public safety.
