The City of Dunwoody invites its residents to honor the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for the nation during its annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, and will be held at the Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial, located at 4770 N. Peachtree Road. Organized by the Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Department in collaboration with the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs VFW Post 10822 and the Dunwoody Woman's Club, the ceremony provides a platform for shared reflection and gratitude. “Memorial Day is a special time to honor the brave Veterans who went into harm’s way, making the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Thomas W. Ariail, Commander of VFW Post 10822, on the City of Dunwoody's official website.
Charged with delivering this year's keynote speech is Major Rick Scheff. A distinguished U.S. Air Force officer and F-16 fighter pilot, who has amassed more than 1,000 flight hours and 300 in combat across various theaters, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. Hailing from Dunwoody and an alumnus of Georgia Tech, Major Scheff currently empowers the combat readiness of one of the Air Force’s premier fighter wings as a Chief Evaluator Pilot at Shaw Air Force Base.
The assembly will also feature remarks from Council Member Joe Seconder, who will lead the pledge of allegiance. Dunwoody Police Chief Mike Carlson will invoke a moment of silence, according to the event details. The spiritual aspect of the ceremony will be led by Robert Comeaux, Worship & Arts Pastor at Dunwoody Baptist Church, entrusted with both the Invocation and Benediction.
Complementing the solemn tributes, will be the patriotic melodies provided by the Georgia State Defense Force Band. Under the baton of Lt. Col. Glenn R. Moore, the band is set to perform cherished anthems such as the National Anthem and God Bless America. Such musical expressions serve not just as a backdrop to the day’s proceedings, but as a resonant thread that binds the community in commemoration and respect for those who have served.
