The local food truck community in Duval County came together to honor one of their own, Charles Faggart, who recently passed away following an incident at Duval County jail. According to News4Jax, Faggart was a food truck owner whose memory was celebrated by his fellow food truck owners at a gathering outside the funeral home just one day before his funeral.
Details surrounding Faggart's untimely demise shed light on his last moments, which were fraught with struggle and controversial restraint measures. As reported by Action News Jax, after Faggart continued to resist while being placed in a restraint chair, he was pepper-sprayed and fitted with spit mask. Despite being deemed fit by the jail's mental health director and a nurse to be placed in self-harm housing, Faggart was pronounced dead on April 10, with the precise cause of death still pending investigation and the potential for criminal charges yet unclear.
At his funeral, Faggart's warmth and humor were remembered by friends and family. "He made everybody around him laugh. If you were having a bad day, you would go to his food truck to get some cheesesteaks and he would tell you some jokes and cheer you up," recounted a friend named Amador in an interview with First Coast News. Bade, another friend, added, "He had such a genuine heart and cared so much for everybody even if he didnt know them, and I think that's just the epitome of who he was."
Investigations by the local authorities continue in collaboration with federal entities. "JSO says they are continuing to work with the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office to gain a complete understanding of the facts and circumstances that led to Faggart’s death," as per First Coast News. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) is liaising with these agencies, hoping to piece together the event that led to the tragic loss of what friends called "a really golden dude," according to statements given by those close to Faggart.
