Eden Prairie's commitment to human rights and diversity was put squarely on display during the May 20 City Council meeting, where the 2024 Human Rights Award winners were announced by the Human Rights and Diversity Commission. The awards, designed to honor individuals and organizations working to foster an inclusive community, recognized several notable champions for their efforts to promote equality in line with the Eden Prairie Manifesto.

Rachel Casper received the Individual Award for her progressive strides in autism awareness and creating a supportive environment for all as the director of Children and Family Ministries at her church. According to details shared by Eden Prairie's official news release, Casper has spearheaded the formation of a sensory-friendly space, adaptable worship resources, and an adaptive Bible camp, making a resounding impact statewide.

On the organizational front, Mission Animal Hospital garnered the Nonprofit Award for its innovative approach in extending animal care to low-income families. Since its inception, the hospital has not only provided affordable veterinary services for nearly 25,000 pet visits annually but has also integrated on-site mental health care and is working to expand its "Compassion in Every Language" program for non-English speakers.

The youth award went to Naim Umar, whose establishment of a non-profit soccer organization has been a game-changer for underprivileged children. "Naim actively identifies and dismantles obstacles preventing youth from accessing organized sports," the Eden Prairie news article noted, detailing his efforts to ensure kids can play soccer free of charge. Umar's leadership in creating a donation-funded system has set a dynamic example for community-driven efforts towards inclusivity in youth sports.

Nominations for the Human Rights Award open each January, inviting submissions on behalf of oneself or others, with recipients selected by the Human Rights and Diversity Commission in March. The award seeks to not only recognize but also spark continued dialogue and action around human rights and inclusivity in Eden Prairie.
