El Paso Community College (EPCC) recently played host to a team from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), highlighting a move towards fostering innovation and research in the field of renewable energy. Among the NREL representatives were Dr. Juan Torres, Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Security, Resilience, and Integration; Ismael Mendoza, Senior Researcher at the Grid Automation & Control Group; Daniel Bernard, Research and Deployment Engineer; and Waleska Rivera of the School of Nursing at Mississippi State University Partnerships Program.

In a visit that underscores the increasing collaboration between educational institutions and research bodies, Dr. Torres talked shop with EPCC students specializing in renewable energy. He presented NREL's summer internship opportunities that extend a practical, hands-on aspect to community college education, a move that could shape the careers of these students, and by extension, the energy landscape itself.

According to EPCC News, Program Coordinator Jose Alvarenga hailed the visit as a "pivotal step" in broadening horizons for students and the sector. “This collaboration marks a pivotal step in advancing energy research and student opportunities," he noted, underscoring the value of such engagements between academia and research entities.

The NREL delegation did not just come to preach, but also to learn as they toured EPCC's renewable energy facilities. They discussed the potential for incorporating advanced technologies like grid automation & microgrids, battery energy storage systems, and AI-driven solutions for renewable energy challenges. The NREL team, impressed by the college’s capabilities, was keen to explore further partnerships that may include faculty and student visits to their main campus in Golden, Colorado.

With the NREL's track record in energy innovation and their position at the forefront of the U.S. energy arena, their involvement with EPCC students marks a significant stride in pairing academic rigor with pioneering research. Such synergies are not only pivotal in cultivating the next generation of experts in sustainable technology but are also fundamental as we as a society strive to address the pressing energy challenges of our time.
