In a move that underscores the growing recognition of mental health issues, the El Paso Police Department recently partnered with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) for a Mental Health Awareness event dubbed "It Starts With Us." The collaboration, which took place at the university's campus, sought to shed light on the approach law enforcement takes when responding to mental health crises and to stress the critical role community support plays in this delicate matter.
During the event, El Paso officers took part in a dialogue with students and faculty, addressing their queries and sparking discussions that might bridge gaps between law enforcement and the public. According to the El Paso Police Department, the officers shared "how we respond to mental health crises and emphasized the importance of community support." The initiative was further strengthened by the involvement of Emergence Health Network, a local mental health service provider, marking a cohesive effort among varied entities to confront a common challenge.
At the helm of initiating such endeavors are individuals who recognize that the issues surrounding mental health, particularly when they intersect with law enforcement, cannot be navigated alone. Interaction between the police and individuals experiencing mental health crises can be fraught with misunderstanding and potential peril. These conversations aim to create a shared understanding and establish protocols that prioritize the well-being of all involved.
