In a notable achievement for a young El Paso math wizard, Canutillo High School's Matthew Medina has snagged the State Champion title at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 5A Calculator Applications Individual State Championship. This victory tops off a remarkable year for Medina, who has also been announced as his school's valedictorian and is set to join the ranks of MIT in the fall. Medina outsmarted a host of competitors from across Texas to clinch the top spot in the math competition on Tuesday.
Matthew Medina's win is a rare feat for El Paso students, marking him as possibly only the fourth individual from the region to earn a state championship in a math-related event in over 30 years. “Matthew has had an outstanding year, both academically and in competition,” said Canutillo High School Principal Candice Marrufo, as per Canutillo ISD. “It’s incredibly fitting that, after a phenomenal four-year career representing Canutillo in math competitions, he finishes his time as an Eagle with a state championship.”
The state title isn't the only thing that Medina will be taking with him as he leaves high school. Announced last week as the valedictorian of the Class of 2025, based on his top-ranked GPA, Medina's academic excellence has also earned him more than $1.5 million in scholarships. His accomplishments are a testament to the high level of talent being nurtured at schools like Canutillo High and highlight the impressive outcomes that dedicated students can achieve.
