In a showing of rising local talent, El Paso ISD students have made a proud statement at the 2025 Congressional Art Competition. Marium Zahra of Young Women’s STEAM Research and Preparatory Academy and Maura Rascon from Coronado High School were both distinguished for their artistic works in a contest that saw 126 submissions out of 22 high schools.
Zahra claimed the Best Portrait award with her piece titled "Baba," a work recognized for its emotional depth and the display of technical skill that celebrated a personal, expressive image. "Tradition," Rascon's piece, which received the TX-16 Choice award, tapped into the theme of The Spirit of El Paso, highlighting the cultural heritage and echoing the community pride that is integral to the city's vibrant atmosphere, according to El Paso ISD.
This year's competition, which saw its first-ever introduction of a theme, was hosted at the El Paso Museum of Art. Both Zahra and Rascon's works, along with the top selections from other participants, will be featured in an exhibition running from May through August at the museum, illustrating the diverse perspectives and creative spirit of El Paso’s youth.
