Everett's urban landscape is set for a green transformation with a new initiative to get more trees into local neighborhoods. In partnership with the Snohomish Conservation District (SCD), the City of Everett, along with the City of Marysville and the Tulalip Tribes, is reaching out to residents and businesses under its Urban & Community Forests Program. It's a push towards sustainability that's aimed at lasting through December 2028, offering not just free trees but also education and engagement opportunities to the community.
Anyone interested in participating can swing by the SCD’s website to check if their neighborhood is eligible for the program. Admittedly, getting a free tree involves more than just putting your hand up. The process entails consulting SCD’s urban tree guide and calling 811 to ensure the spot you're eyeing for your new leafy friend doesn't clash with any underground utilities. Applications have to be in by June 1 to get the trees by October, but if you miss the boat this round, future cycles will give you another crack at it. For those unsure about their green thumb capabilities, planting assistance is on offer to nail that tree right from the get-go.
On the engagement front, the city is setting up shop at the Sorticulture event, slated for June 6-8, 2025, in Downtown Everett. This is the place to be for anyone looking to go deeper into the initiative or just scope out what’s up with Everett’s green scene. As reported by the City of Everett, more workshops and chances to get involved will be announced down the line, aiming to make the city’s tree canopy flourish.
It's clear Everett is branching out in its environmental efforts, and this program is a tangible step towards a greener, more sustainable city. Being rooted in community engagement, it offers an educational dimension to residents who want to understand the importance of trees beyond their aesthetic value and ensure that the increase in urban tree canopy is not just a momentary trend but a growing commitment. Details about the program, future events, and how to get your free trees can be found at Everett City's official page.
