El Dorado County has announced plans to expand the Rubicon Trail staging area in Tahoma. The project will increase parking for off-road trailers and reduce congestion on nearby streets. The expansion is part of a broader effort by El Dorado and Placer counties to manage trailhead use and protect surrounding environments, according to the El Dorado County.

El Dorado County is expanding the Tahoma staging area to address frequent parking overflow. NCE Associate Scientist David Rios said, "Currently, when the parking lot is full at the Tahoma staging area, parking will spill along the access road, which can lead to overcrowding and resource damage to the adjacent lands," and, "Overflow parking further encroaches into nearby residential areas when the lot and road are full, so this project is designed to prevent those issues and help us create an experience we can all enjoy." The expansion will add 32 to 34 new trailer spots and 35,140 square feet of pavement, with a ban on shoulder parking planned to reduce street parking. Placer County Tahoe Engineering Manager Seth Warren stated, "These trailhead improvements not only contribute to better recreational access, they help mitigate soil erosion and parking overflow as well." Similar improvements are planned for the Lower Sawtooth and Ward Creek trailheads.

El Dorado County is collecting public input on an off-roading trail expansion project. Residents can participate by attending a community meeting on Wednesday at Granlibakken Resort, filling out an online survey, or contacting the Parks & Trails Division. Details are available on the county’s website. A follow-up meeting will present technical studies and gather feedback on the project and its environmental impact before construction begins.
