A fan at a recent Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park is in critical condition after a fall from the stands. The incident occurred last night during a game against the Chicago Cubs, as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh. The man plummeted approximately 20 feet to the warning track after falling over the right-field bleachers' 21-foot Clemente Wall.
Play was interrupted following the fall, which happened shortly after Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen hit a pivotal RBI double. McCutchen and other players appeared visibly shaken, with some seen saying prayers and taking a knee on the field. The man was quickly attended to by trainers, police, EMS, and by another fan who jumped down from a lower section to assist, according to 6ABC. It was not immediately clear if the second individual was a family member or just a bystander.
The team's manager, Derek Shelton, was quoted by NBC News expressing his concern: "Before we start, I just want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game." McCutchen also took to social media to express his sentiments, stating, "Truly hate what happened tonight. Cant help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him."
Pittsburgh Public Safety has disclosed that the man was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. Adding to the revelation, officers from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police were seen investigating the area where the man fell. Detectives from the Violent Crime Unit are also investigating the situation, which has brought attention once again to the safety measures in place at the stadium.
