A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to restore research by two Harvard Medical School doctors that had been removed from the Patient Safety Network due to references to LGBTQ+ populations. The removed articles included one by Dr. Gordon D. Schiff on suicide risk in high-risk groups, and another by Dr. Celeste S. Royce on endometriosis in transgender individuals, as per The Harvard Crimson.
The judge ruled that the removal likely violated the First Amendment and the Administrative Procedure Act. During the case, a government attorney acknowledged the removals amounted to viewpoint discrimination. The judge's injunction requires the articles to be restored within seven days but does not prevent the government from enforcing future content guidelines, as per the Boston Globe.
Technical challenges remain, as the official responsible for managing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) website is expected to be laid off, and there are currently no plans to resume publishing new articles.
The case has drawn attention to issues of academic freedom and the handling of public health information involving marginalized groups.
