Former Cottleville Fire Chief Rob Wylie is making a career transition, joining St. Charles County Government as the Assistant Director of Administration. Starting next Monday, Wylie, who has a long-standing history of service in the community and in the sphere of emergency management, will be moving into John Greifzu’s prior position, overseeing a team of County department directors. Greifzu left his role earlier this year to manage the St. Charles City-County Library District, as indicated in a statement from St. Charles County's official announcement.
In his new role, Wylie will be bringing to the table his extensive background in not just the fire service but also in government administration and budget management. Working as Cottleville's Fire Chief from 2005 to 2016 gave him substantial experience in negotiating various contracts and serving in multiple leadership roles—ranging from being chairman of STARRS, which dealt with administering Homeland Security grants, to incident commander during the May 2013 tornado that left a damaging trail in St. Charles County. Despite his part-time work since 2017, his dedication extended across various emergency response and public safety areas, including the Emergency Management division of the County Police Department and the Regional SWAT Team, where he served for more than 20 years, arriving at scenes as a medic.
County Executive Steve Ehlmann had high praise for Wylie's credentials, saying, "Rob comes to this office with an excellent background in fire service and emergency management," and adding, "But he also has extensive experience in government administration, budget management and intergovernmental cooperation." This was conveyed to the public through the St. Charles County's press release.
Wylie’s resume paints a picture of a man deeply involved in the infrastructure of emergency and disaster response at all levels. Acting as director of the St. Charles/Warren County Hazardous Materials Team and as president of the Greater St. Louis Fire Chiefs Association, Wylie's leadership roles reflected his commitment to local and state safety initiatives. A man accustomed to bearing the weight of responsibility, he also served on the faculty of the Counter Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support program and held a certification as an instructor at the Department of Homeland Security's Center for Domestic Preparedness. Wylie told St. Charles County's communications, "My management style is collaborative," underscoring his ethos of seeking decisions that benefit the whole rather than the one.
With a tenure in St. Charles County that spans over four decades, Wylie's local roots and professional achievements from a bachelor's degree at Lindenwood University to his role as an instructor for the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office showcase both his dedication to public service and his deep investment in the community he's helped shape and protect. At the seasoned age of 64, Wylie’s step into this new position is a testament to a career built on a foundation of expertise, experience, and an unwavering commitment to service. He and his family have long been part of the fabric of St. Charles County, with a legacy that is set to continue influencing the area’s governance and safety.
