The future shape of Fort Worth's East Berry Street got a little clearer this week after the City Council greenlit the East Berry Street Corridor Plan. The strategy sets the stage for transforming the stretch from I-35 to Lake Arlington's outskirts into a mixed-use artery to facilitate foot, bike, and transit travel. The City of Fort Worth recommends installing advanced fiber and cooling pavement and identifying nine key sites to fuel economic growth.
This plan is grabbing attention because it promises to revitalize an area with safety and operational updates. Kicked off in January 2023 and wrapped up by August next year, the study's findings were gleaned from open houses, discussions, and an informative website that kept public discourse alive. Recommendations are just the beginning; they point towards a Complete Streets design for East Berry Street that marches in step with the aspirations of the city's 2050 Comprehensive Plan.
The plan triumphantly snagged the Texas American Planning Association Gold award for transportation planning, giving it a shiny badge of legitimacy. The path forward includes adopting the proposed form-based zoning code outlined by the City News and awaiting a proper schematic for the stretch from I-35 to Miller Avenue. These are the nuts and bolts that prep the city to compete for grants and funding opportunities essential for bringing the vision off the page and into reality.
