Galveston County has become the latest battleground in a series of high-stakes legal efforts aimed at holding gaming platforms accountable for their roles in child sexual exploitation cases. Discord and Roblox are facing a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of a Galveston County girl who was sexually assaulted by a predator she met on Roblox and communicated with through Discord. The predator allegedly groomed her on Roblox before escalating the encounters to include explicit content on Discord and an in-person meeting, where the sexual assault occurred.
According to Click2Houston, the lawsuit alleges that Roblox and Discord focused more on profits than on safety, by failing to implement necessary safety mechanisms despite being aware of the dangers posed by their platforms. Anapol Weiss, the firm handling the case, has stated it is also investigating hundreds of similar cases nationwide.
The victim's mother reportedly utilized parental controls on her children's devices, but these measures were not sufficient to prevent her 13-year-old daughter from being sexually exploited. "Essentially, she was this vibrant student. She had artistic aspirations, and now she struggles constantly with fear, moments of dissociation, and she has basically lost her sense of safety and innocence," the victim's attorney Kristen Feden told abc13.
A representative for Discord told Hoodline Houston, “We can't comment on ongoing litigation and will respond appropriately through the legal process. Discord is deeply committed to the safety of our users and we take decisive actions when we detect violations of our policies, including removing content, banning users, shutting down servers, and engaging with law enforcement as appropriate.” The company said it employs both proactive and reactive tools—including machine learning models, PhotoDNA image hashing, and actionable in-platform reporting mechanisms—to help detect and address violations of its community guidelines.
Discord emphasized to Hoodline Houston that it invests heavily in safety, offering tools such as sensitive content filters and safety alerts automatically enabled for teen users via its Teen Safety Assist initiative. Other features, like the Family Center and Guardian’s Guide, are designed to help empower parents and guardians to understand their teen’s activity on Discord and foster meaningful communication about online safety. According to Discord, the platform collaborates with organizations like the Family Online Safety Institute and participates in industry efforts such as the Tech Coalition’s Lantern program, which helps companies detect and prevent child exploitation online. Discord also says it shares its safety technology with the broader industry to help strengthen protections for young people across platforms.
Authorities are also stepping in, with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office filing a consumer protection lawsuit against Discord, and the State of Florida issuing a subpoena against Roblox. "Swift action and oversight is needed to ensure that platforms popular among children are no longer havens for predatory behavior," said Alexandra Walsh, shareholder at Anapol Weiss, as per Click2Houston.
